The Demise of Copy Editing (Set to Music)

It is indeed a sad thing to witness the layoffs of and general disregard for the honorable profession of copy editing (is it one word or two? if I were a copy editor, I'd know).

But if you're going to go down in flames, you may as well do so with a song!

Great vid. I wonder if all those volunteer cast members are laid off copy editors. Hmm . . . possible alternative career option?

While the writing stage creates your copy, it's the editing part that truly whips it into shape. Instead of being concerned with simply expressing your ideas, the post-writing process is geared at presenting them in the best way possible.

Truer words were never spoken, SEO Copy Editing.

I think my professional reputation has been saved a few times due to good copy editing.

Unfortunately, copy editing isn't as valued in the publishing industry as it once was. You only have to pick up almost any current novel to notice this, based on the number of typos, missing words and grammatical errors you'll encounter.

In newspapers, copy editors (as I understand it) also serve as fact checkers to an extent. Another valuable contribution that's going by the wayside, as copy editors get laid off.
